Opera is exhilarating live entertainment which unites the very best of vocal and instrumental music, theatre, dance and visual artistry. Now add children and you have a magical combination.

In 2006 I was commissioned to adapt and present a children’s production of Mozart’s Magic Flute in celebration of the 250th anniversary of the composer’s birth. It was such a rewarding experience that I could not resist doing it again. This summer’s production will be the comic masterpiece The Barber of Seville-a lively, colourful work filled with beautiful melodies and memorable characters . I am thrilled to have the children share the stage with bass-baritone Philippe Martel.

The Count is in love with Rosina, but Rosina has an elderly guardian who intends to marry her himself. Join us as FIGARO, that irrepressible barber who spends as much time scheming as shaving comes to the rescue.

Philippe Martel received a bachelor’s degree in vocal performance from the Schulich School of Music of McGill University where he sang the roles of Il Commandatore in Mozart’s Don Giovanni and King Cadmus in Handel’s Semele. His solo performances have included the Requiems of Mozart and Fauré, Handel’s Messiah and Mendelssohn’s Oratorio St-Paul and an appearance as a choir soloist with the Montreal Symphony.  Most recently, he performed the role of Publio in Mozart’s Clemenza di Tito at the Orford Festival, under the direction of Yannick Nézet-Séguin and toured Canada as Sarastro in The Magic Flute with Jeunesses Musicales .
